Brittingham & Hixon began operations
in Baraboo in October of 1935 when they acquired a lumberyard
operation located at 501 Broadway Street. D.L. Van Auken was the
first manager. Over the years, the old facilities underwent much
remodeling, including the building of a new office, but they continued
to retain many of the features of the old-time yard that it was.
While many of these features worked well when lumber was loaded
and unloaded by hand and delivered by horse and wagon, with the
advent of forklifts, these features became a handicap.
In 1993, Sauk County decided it needed to build a new building
in which to house many of the county offices. They hoped to do
this very near to the present county courthouse. At the same time,
Brittingham & Hixon realized that they had outgrown their
present landlocked facility located across the street from the
courthouse. In April of 1993, B&H acquired the vacant Rogers/Jenson
property on Eighth Street and proceeded to build a new lumberyard.
The county acquired the old B&H location and was able to build
the county office building they needed. The resulting relocation
into these two new facilities worked out well for both parties
and for the Baraboo community in general..
Brittingham & Hixon continues to operate their full service
retail lumberyard at 1139 Eighth Street. The expanded office and
showroom area are filled with many full-sized displays of kitchen
cabinets, doors and windows, and offer the shopper a chance to
see, touch and open the products they intend to buy. Stop in and
see the knowledgeable sales staff that is always ready to answer
your questions.
