Alexander Lumber - Ashland IL

Alexander Lumber Co. opened for business in Ashland Illinois in August 1899. The Original lumber yard in Ashland was started in 1873 by J.S. and G.S Russell of Jacksonville. Edward Wyatt was manager until 1876, then Robert Anderson became manager. Alexander Lumber rented the buildings from the Russells and operated the yard from 1899 to 1903, when Robert Anderson purchased the property. In March 1924, Alexander Lumber bought the land, buildings, inventory and equipment form Anderson; Alexander has operated a yard in Ashland ever since.
G.J. Sherman managed the Ashland yard from 1924 until 1927. He was succeeded by A.B. Carls who managed it until 1947. Howard Douglass then was manager until 1959, Estill Gerard until 1981, Mark Singleton until 1988 and Chuck Knapp is the current manager.
A completely new office building was built in 1955. This was destroyed by fire in 1978 and rebuilt in 1980.
